When we one day glance back to examine the art of the first half of the 21st century, and we parse out the pre-pandemic from the post-pandemic, we’ll find Wendy Jane Bantam’s “Birds and Superheroes” in a curious category of its own: art of a wickedly rosy-hued prescience in a time of rapid collapse. The creation of this work predates the global epidemic, but predicts the miraculous bouts of health exhibited by the earth and its non-human populations when travel ceased, production eased, and pollution waned. Drawing from her signature palette of colors that seem derived from the richest hues of nature, from fields of flowers, from the heart of the storm, from under the sea, Bantam creates a phantasm of creatures taking flight, setting sail, conducting electricity, in a landscape simmering with damage. These paintings and etchings depict these creatures eyeing their predicaments with an intimidating grace, and the work communicates with wit and beauty, creating a dystopia with optimism.
