L. Kent Wolgamott: Must-see Francisco Souto exhibition opens Friday at Kiechel Fine Art

“Dicotomias,” a new exhibition from Francisco Souto, opens Friday at Kiechel Fine Art, and it, like its predecessor, is a must-see, likely to be one of the top art shows in Lincoln in 2018.

A follow-up to his 2016 exhibition, “A Memory in Peril,” “Dicotomias” continues its exploration of the cultural upheaval and dislocation in Venezuela, Souto’s home country. But, unlike “A Memory in Peril,” it does so through symbolic imagery as much as his depictions of Venezuelan people.

Technically, Souto, a printmaker turned master of drawing, intriguingly changes the medium used for the drawings, largely putting down black-leaded pencils in favor of colored pencils. Those layered and varnished drawings are striking and, with the subject matter, sadly beautiful.
