William Ashby McCloy

William McCloy (1913-2000)

Raised in China until the age of 13, William McCloy returned to the States in 1926 and began his formal art education at the University of Iowa in 1930. He received his B.A. in Art, before spending a year at Yale University. He returned to Iowa to complete his graduate studies in Psychology of Art. During the course of his education, he studied sculpture, painting, and printmaking with masters in the individual fields.

McCloy spent time as a professor of art at both Drake University and the University of Iowa. He was privileged to work closely with John Steuart Curry as assistant on three murals projects as well as execute two mural commissions on his own. After a varied career of teaching and working as a clinical psychologist in the U.S. Army, McCloy again returned to the University of Iowa to receive a Ph. D. in Painting and later in Art History. His burning desire to continuously learn and teach was continued when he later served as Director of the School of Art at the University of Manitoba, and later as Chairman of the Art Department at Connecticut College.

Exhibited: The Chicago Art Institute, the National Academy of Design, the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, the Cincinnati Art Museum, the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Metropolitan Museum, the Walker Art Center, the Library of Congress, the Joslyn Memorial Museum, the Vancouver Art Gallery, the Toronto Art Gallery, and the Winnipeg Art Gallery. His work can be found at Connecticut College, the Norwich Free Academy, the Public Library of New London, the Library of Congress, Wolfsonian Institution, the Later Memorial Museum, as well as numerous public and private collections.
