Wayne Thiebaud

Wayne Thiebaud (b. 1920)

Born in Mesa, Arizona, Wayne Thiebaud’s paintings of food and consumer goods have become a familiar part of our art historical landscape. His depiction of commonplace objects found in middle-class America emerged in the mid-1950s. Thiebaud earned his B.A. from Sacramento State College in 1941 and later his M.A. in 1952. An influential art professor, Thiebaud is widely recognized as a pop-art realist painter, as his signature painting technique shows the luscious texture of the oils and often transforms itself into the very material being shown, from frosting to whipped cream to metal.
