Thomas Lowell Edwards

Thomas Lowell Edwards received his MFA from the University of Nebraska–Lincoln in 2014 and his BFA in ceramics from the Appalachian Center for Craft in 2008. Originally from Brigham City, UT, Edwards was an apprentice to professor emeritus Thanos A. Johnson in Marble, CO. During multiple international experiences, Edwards has researched cultural connections to ceramics. Each experience has had a dramatic impact on his current work and informs his studio practice. As an artist in residence in Jingdezhen, China as a Windgate Fellow, he became inspired by porcelain’s birthplace and fascinated by the integration of industrial porcelain production remnants into the city’s architectural elements. That initial trip sparked a love of travel and he has since received multiple awards to fund international research and residencies. He has received the Baden-Württemberg Stipend for Vocationally Qualified People to participate in an internship program in Germany where he worked with a ceramicist. He has also taken part in the residency program at A.I.R. Vallauris in the south of France. Edwards’ work has been included in the Future Now exhibit at the Frist Center for Visual Arts in Nashville and the Ceramic Top 40 | 2013 in Kansas City. His work was selected for the Clay Studio National in Philadelphia, and he is a finalist for the Zanesville Prize for Contemporary Ceramics for the second year in a row (2014, 2015). Ceramics Monthly selected Edwards as a 2014 Emerging Artist. Edwards has concluded a residency at the Bemis Center for Contemporary Arts as the inaugural recipient of the University of Nebraska-Lincoln MFA Bemis Residency Prize. He was invited as a resident/fellow for the Sandhills Institute in Rushville, NE. He has set up his studio in Lincoln, NE, where he lives with his wife and son.
