Karen Matheis
My work reinterprets the midwest landscape with focus of human interaction with nature.
Responding to and building upon past interpretations of the land such as sentimental, intimidating, decorative and spiritual, I explore ways to depict my experience with my surroundings through memory map making. Patterns and routes taken are recorded. Observance of humans activity with the environment are interpreted with grids and other infrastructure and includes layering with cardiogram and cadastral type studies.
My process includes sketching as well as approaches derived from printmaking.
